Our Travels in Monkeytown

It was the night of the first big snow in some time. Just driving around Brooklyn to put away our gear and drop people off after the show was hellish. (Crap, it took me until 6am to get back to Central NJ!)

Still, it was a great show. I am told we managed to sell out, and even had a waiting list. And even if we didn’t, I could still do no less than thank everyone, artists and attendees alike. J manages to put it better than me:

Thanks everyone for braving the most severe elements of the season to see us perform. I honestly did not realize how much everyone was willing to trust us to make something good–if I had known, we wouldn’t have played so fast! Well, now that this has been brought to my attention, I hope not to betray this trust in the future.

There wasn’t much time (or focus) to say much at the performance, so I’d like to share the story of how we got here:

When Tamara approached us several months ago about performing at Monkeytown, I figured we would throw some oblique videos up on the screen and play some instrumentals. This dubious assumption was shattered by Trevor, who made two points:

  • We’re playing Monkeytown.
  • At Monkeytown, people do more interesting things than play along to oblique videos. Why shouldn’t we?

Once that gauntlet was thrown down, all of a sudden I got scared. In a good way, I guess. I hemmed, I hawed, I asked anybody who would listen for, if not advice, some kind of assurance that despite the fact that I did not know what I was doing, somehow things would turn out all right. You listened, you advised, you assured, and things turned out all right. So I believe all of you (yes, you) deserve a ton of credit for our successes.

So there you have it: Fear + Support = Something Interesting. Thanks for being part of our equation!

This is not an end. We hope to be back soon.

Indeed we do. But first, we have some records to make…

And some footage from that night to show, once our man Scott makes it available.

(With special thanks to The Freshmaker for the pic posted above and many more.)
